While in Springfield, IL for a long spring break weekend, the family and I had plans to visit a few breweries in town to enjoy some attractions as well as a few beers and talk to people about Brewourism. Our plan for the day was to visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, get some lunch at Jerk Shop Go, and then head over to Buzz Bomb shortly after they opened.
We had let Buzz Bomb know we were coming so when we arrived the head brewer slapped our sticker on the wall and showed my family and I around the place. First he showed the brewing area and the modern brewing equipment they used and were obviously proud of. Continuing the tour back in the tasting room he told us about how they had created most of the decor in the tasting rooms, from the light fixtures to the table and countertops.
We hadn't noticed the upstairs portion of the brewery when we came in so they took us up there, where the place had a very different feel. I felt the upstairs to be a lot more intimate and cozy than the more industrial feel of the downstairs with booths, books, games, and even a suit of armor which the brewer informed us was his own personal suit as he used to do fighting in it. Before my wife and I returned to our beers we asked him where the name Buzz Bomb came from, to which we learned was in homage to the brewer's past hobby of making mead and them being fans of the Dead Kennedys.
My wife and I spent the rest of the visit enjoying the beer while our kids threw back a few Dr Peppers experimenting with the cameras on our phones. Buzz Bomb was a great place to visit with the whole family, and easily incorporated into an itinerary of President Lincoln sightseeing with multiple attractions to visit within walking distance of the brewery.
